Context

As some of the work is confidential, I am not be able to show project visuals and share in-depth information.

While interning with Nedap Retail, I conducted user research regarding their iD Cloud App’s core feature and designed gamification elements

Nedap Retail’s products are used to monitor inventory, prevent losses, and help retailers to become more sustainable. The iD Cloud App is mainly used to count the stock in a store. These counts are performed regularly and are already more effective and quicker compared to counting by hand.

Nedap already improves the regular stock counting process, but many retail store workers still prefer the parts of their job which includes selling clothes and talking to customers. Therefore, the assignment of the internship was to research what processes can be optimized and how the motivation of the retail store users can be improved, all by using gamification elements.

Challenge

Research

I shadowed several users to understand the counting process and possible issues they are facing. Moreover, I interviewed the users regarding their experience with the app and the counting process.

To come up with possible gamification options, I researched psychology-related literature and brainstormed ideas about how certain gamifications could be implemented in the iD Cloud App. Based on all research, I identified requirements for the gamification elements.

Design

Based on the observed issues, requirements, and gamification literature, I came up with different gamification elements. After conversations with the Product Manager, we eventually chose three gamification elements for testing. To test them, I designed a clickable prototype in Figma.

Testing

I showed users the clickable prototype and observed how they interacted with it. After the interaction, I interviewed them about how they perceived the gamification elements and the impact on their motivation and work flow. Those research findings were then used to formulate recommendations for further work on the iD Cloud App.

Takeaways & Learnings

Working in a product team. The internship gave me an amazing insight into working in a product team. I was in contact with the UX Designer, Product Manager, and Software Developers which allowed me to understand how they approach problems and are involved in product development.

Learning about gamification. While I had experience with conducting user research and designing persuasive features, I learned a lot about gamification elements. Especially the cognitive and psychological aspects behind it made it very interesting to learn about.
